Episode 13 -Internet Anxiety with Zack Cohn
After a brief and stilted discussion of Riff Raff and Action Bronson’s troubled relationship with Pimp C and Ghostface, respectively, Willy, Marko, and very special guest (and Internet marketing maven) Zack Cohn delve into a conversation about why the Internet has ruined all of our lives, or at least our ability to listen to rap music.
Consider this Champale to be an Internet support group of sorts. You’re not alone in feeling bombarded and empty — we’re right there with you.
This episode discusses Twitter’s utopian goals, and its inability to deliver on them. This leads to a discussion of rappers’ Twitter accounts and branding: Is Noreaga’s Twitter on the Shitter a bad idea for Noreaga’s ‘brand’? How is Andre Nickatina like Rob Delaney? Does a rapper need to maintain his brand on Twitter, or should he be himself?
And in the last segment, Zack turns the tables on us, interviewing Willy about his experience blogging about rap, which leads to larger discussion of how blogs, which used to surface content both old and new, have pivoted into constantly chasing the novel, the new. Has the medium ruined the message? or something? We have no fucking clue, but we hope you might feel slightly less anxious about the Internet having listened to this episode — at least you know you’re not alone.

Yung Jake “Datamosh”
Lil B “Age of Information”

Was a guest on these guys’ ‘cast Champale where we talked about the above. Cool talk, Interesting and informative and I squeezed a Yung Jake song in there somehow.

“We’re not driven by market research or whatever other people do. We’re just doing what feels right and funny to us. If that makes us weirdos, that’s fine. If we were ever described as ‘average,’ that would be the end of the magazine.” NYT’s Lucky Peach profile

If there was ever an American flamboyance, it happened in those 25 years from ’50 to ’75, and it had to do with the blues, R&B, rock ’n’ roll, big cars, and giant breasts - Iggy Pop […..]

I’m not into concerts. I’m not into live music. I’d rather listen to a record. I don’t like being in crowds, and live shows don’t usually sound good. Plus they’re usually fake; bands pretend that it’s spontaneous but they’re doing exactly what they did the night before. It’s hot and smelly and unpleasant. When I toured, I found the clubs so depressing. The whole thing would be depressing. You’d get to the club and it was usually painted black inside, and the sound system is terrible, the people who work there are usually completely indifferent or are actively hostile to you as a musician. It’s unpleasant when it’s filled up with people who are looking at you, with like “what do you have to show me?” And it’s even worse at sound check, when it’s empty and the lights are on.
